How to Store Cannabis Safely at Home

Safe cannabis storage is not only about preserving freshness. It helps prevent accidental poisoning, keeps important label information with the product and reduces the chance that a child, visitor or pet will mistake an edible for ordinary food. A good storage routine begins as soon as the product enters the home.

Keep cannabis locked and out of sight

Health Canada recommends storing cannabis locked away, out of sight and out of reach of children and pets. A high shelf alone is not enough: children climb, visitors may move items and pets can reach surprising places. Use a lockbox, locked cupboard or secure container that only responsible adults can open.

Choose one consistent location rather than leaving products in handbags, coat pockets, bedside drawers or vehicles. Everyone in the household who is responsible for safety should know that the storage area is restricted.

Keep the original packaging

Original legal packaging is child-resistant and carries essential information: THC and CBD amounts, ingredients, warnings, package details and traceability information. Keep the product in that package whenever possible.

Do not put cannabis flower into an unlabelled jar or transfer gummies into a regular candy bag. If an additional container is needed for odour control, place the intact original package inside it. This keeps the label available and reduces confusion.

Edible cannabis should be stored separately from ordinary food and drinks. Avoid the same drawer or cupboard used for snacks. A clearly labelled locked container is especially important when edibles resemble chocolate, candy or baked goods.

Protect quality without creating new risks

Store dried cannabis in a cool, dark and dry place, away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Close the package after each use. Moisture can affect quality, but adding improvised humidifying materials or food items can introduce contamination. Follow the producer’s storage directions.

Oils, beverages and other formats may have product-specific instructions. Check whether refrigeration is required and make sure refrigerated cannabis is still locked and separated from regular food.

Make disposal deliberate

Do not leave unwanted cannabis where another person or animal can access it. Keep it secured until it can be disposed of appropriately. Do not flush products unless official local guidance specifically directs that method. For questions about a particular product, contact the authorized retailer, producer or local waste authority.

Prepare for visitors and travel

Before guests arrive, check tables, counters and accessible bags. Child-resistant does not mean child-proof. A package that is safe in a locked cupboard is not safe when left open during use.

When travelling, review the laws for the destination and every border involved. Do not take cannabis across an international border, even when travelling to a place where cannabis is legal. In a vehicle, follow provincial transport rules and keep cannabis secured away from the driver.

Use a simple storage checklist

Ask five questions: Is it locked? Is it out of sight? Is it in the original package? Is it separate from food? Can a child or pet reach it? If any answer is uncertain, change the storage setup immediately.

Responsible storage protects the whole household. It also ensures that the exact product information remains available if there is an accidental exposure, quality concern or need to contact a health professional.
